Here at Avalon Acres Farm, we encourage everyone to eat seasonal Vegetables and fruit.
However, what exactly are the benefits in eating seasonal?
One of the challenges when leading a much more healthier lifestyle is that you have to get used to seasonal eating - that is, eating food that is harvested during that season.
But this does not mean total restriction. We still believe that everyone should learn to be able to prepare and preserve food so they can eat it over the winter months when it′s not available straight from the garden.
However, it is important that their local heirloom tomatoes from a jar in January should be eaten when it's fresh and straight from their local farms - not from some international farm or foreign country.
When harvesting summer fruits, they are best enjoyed during that time for the best tastes and the most nutritious version.
Of course, freezing is a great option as well - you can always put lots of strawberries and blueberries in the freezer and we enjoy blueberry cobbler in December. Freezing, canning and dehydrating / drying are all great methods to deal with excess food and it helps secure your food supply later in the year.
However, eating fresh and eating locally still cannot be beaten.
