In Florida, 2007, over sixty four thousand sea turtle hatchlings were disoriented by artificial Light pollution caused mainly by unshielded light fixtures and short wavelength bulbs on beachfront dwellings, highlighting the need for eco lighting retrofits.
Around three per cent of all nests deposited in the state each year are disoriented . FWCC estimates that there are currently between seven hundred and one thousand private properties with problem lighting on Florida beaches.
But there is hope. Beachfront lighting can be properly managed to benefit both human beings and sea turtles. Generally speaking, a good sea turtle friendly lighting fixture directs light down to the ground where it is needed for safety, outfitted with a red or amber Led Light bulb.
