Sustainable Leafcutter Bees are general pollinators and perfect for your summer gardens!
They are prevalent throughout Canada and the US.
This bee’s (mud) that separates and encloses the pollen and egg is masticated leaf sections.
This sustainable bee is a generalist, and will fertilize most flowers! It flies in the upper temperature range: 70°'s to 100+. Since it is solitary, it is as gentle as the spring mason bees.
This species, Megachile rotundata, is used in various commercial crops and it nests in a smaller hole.
6mm easy tears, smaller reeds, and new 91-hole wood trays or seasoned 104-hole wood trays are required for this bee.
Sustainable Leafcutter Bees uses leaf bits from non-fibrous leaf material.
Rose leaves, if proximate, may have neatly cut holes from them.
If your neighbor sprays insecticide when they see holes in their leaves, you may want to educate them on what a healthy garden looks like!
You can always keep them in your refrigerator until you are ready for them to develop.
They must be placed in 70 degree+ temperature for the bees to metamorphosis and emerge as adult bees 4 to 5 weeks later.
