Here at Fat Blossom, we are a CSA farm.
CSA is short for Community Supported Agriculture and it is an idea that originated in Japan. Members of a CSA would generally buy a share of a farm’s production in advance of the season. Once the season is over and the crops have been gathered, they would receive a portion of fresh seasonal local produce at a rate that is much lower than retail.
This sort of arrangement is beneficial for both both farmers and members. That is, farmers would have a guaranteed market and money to buy supplies and tools at the beginning of the season. The members would also get fresh local food at near wholesale prices. One top of that, they would also also get to know where their food is coming from and how it is raised.
This sort of arrangement is also meant to be very collaborative. For many members of CSAs, they have the option to help select what is grown and even volunteer their time on the farm. This can allow people to forge a closer relationship with the food they eat, the land it comes from and also the farmer or the producer.
