Here at Songbirds of Northern Indiana, we are a qualified organisation and we are dedicated and passionate about our cause. Our goal is to help raise funds and draw awareness towards the importance of rehabilitation, Conservation and release of our beautiful wildlife.
When it comes to rehabilitation, it is often overlooked. The truth is, there are over 800 species of wild birds that are protected by federal law. This aims to prevent wild birds from being made into household pets, be taken advantage of or be destroyed by humans for whatever purpose.
To be a wild bird rehabilitater, one should have both state and federal permit to care for injured and orphaned birds. In fact, without a permit, even vet clinics aren't legally allowed to treat wild birds.
Because of this law, the rehabilitation of protected birds is regulated by the state.
Rehabilitators should be responsible for maintaining proper records of each bird that comes in for treatment. They must also submit an annual report that includes all of the above information in order to keep their permits. They are also responsible for reporting any signs of abuse or acts of cruelty to birds to the proper authorities.
